According to Ireporter Online, veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has advised women to prioritise personal growth and independence before venturing into marriage.

In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Agu emphasised that women should attain mental, physical, spiritual, and financial stability before committing to marriage. He maintained that marriage should complement a woman’s life and not serve as the defining element of her identity.

“The best advice I can give any woman before marriage is to be complete on your own. Make sure you are stable mentally, physically, spiritually, and financially,” Agu stated. “Marriage does not make you whole; it should only be an addition, not the missing piece in your life.”

The actor urged women to cultivate their own identity, career, or business — no matter how modest — to safeguard themselves from financial or emotional vulnerability in the event of divorce, widowhood, or family disputes.

He cautioned against total dependence on a husband for emotional or financial support, warning that such reliance could lead to helplessness if that support is withdrawn. “Before you marry, build yourself. Have a skill, a business idea, or at least understand what being independent truly means,” he advised.

Agu also spoke about the harsh realities often faced by widows, single mothers, and divorced women, noting that society can be unkind to women who lack personal foundations. “If your in-laws happen to be unkind and you have nothing of your own, they might strip you of everything your husband left behind,” he lamented.

He encouraged women to see marriage as a partnership rather than an achievement, stressing that true fulfilment lies in self-development and independence. “A woman who views marriage as her ultimate goal risks losing her sense of purpose and limiting her growth,” Agu concluded. “The choices and decisions you make today will shape your tomorrow.”
