BREAKING: African Union Suspends Niger Over Military Coup
The African Union announced on Tuesday that it has suspended Niger until civilian governance is reinstated in the nation, and it will evaluate the potential consequences of any military intervention in the troubled Sahel country.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union has called for the AU Commission to conduct an assessment of the economic, social, and security impacts of deploying a standby force in Niger and present its findings to the Council.

This decision follows significant disagreements within the bloc on this issue.
The military ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, leading the West African regional organization ECOWAS to threaten the use of force to restore him to power.
ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, has agreed to activate a “standby force” as a last resort to reestablish democracy in Niger, while still seeking a diplomatic solution.
Divergent viewpoints within the African Union on potential military intervention were highlighted during a recent meeting concerning the crisis.
The coup has exacerbated global concerns about the Sahel region, which is grappling with increasing jihadist uprisings associated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
Niger becomes the fourth West African nation to experience a coup since 2020, following Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali.
The coup in Niger’s history is the fifth since the country gained independence from France in 1960.
President Bazoum’s election in 2021 marked a significant milestone, paving the way for the nation’s first peaceful transfer of power. He and his family have been detained at the presidential residence since the coup, raising international worries about their well-being in custody.
