After the Super Falcons’ thrilling 3-2 victory over Australia in their second group match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, former Arsenal legend Ian Wright urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to promptly settle any outstanding payments owed to the players.

In a remarkable display of strength, Nigeria’s Super Falcons made an impressive comeback on Thursday, overturning a goal deficit to deliver a crushing defeat to Women’s World Cup co-hosts Australia at Lang Park Stadium in Brisbane.

The Super Falcons’ performance was particularly commendable considering the challenges they faced leading up to the tournament. Their coach, Randy Waldrum, had a disagreement with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) before the event, accusing them of owing him, his staff, and the players unpaid wages and allowances. Furthermore, Waldrum claimed that the NFF interfered in player selection, leading to the banishment of goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi from the team after she requested payment of the players’ bonuses. Only after Oluehi wrote a letter of apology was the ban lifted. The coach also alleged that the NFF prevented him from bringing his assistant to Australia.

However, despite these obstacles, the Super Falcons displayed remarkable team spirit and determination on the field. Emily van Egmond scored for Australia in the first minute of added time in the first half, but Uchenna Kalu quickly equalized for Nigeria in the fifth minute of stoppage time. On the 65th minute, Ohale put the Super Falcons ahead, and Asisat Oshoala, who came on as a substitute in the 64th minute, capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Matildas to make it 3-1. Although Alanna Kennedy scored for Australia in the 10th minute of stoppage time in the second half, it was not enough to prevent Nigeria from securing the victory.

With this win, the Super Falcons have taken a significant step towards qualifying for the knockout stage of the tournament, needing only a draw against Ireland in their final group game.
