According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared Friday, June 12, as a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

The government stated that June 12 remains a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of citizens whose struggles helped establish democratic governance in the country.

The Minister reiterated the commitment of the Tinubu administration to upholding democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance, noting that these values remain central to national development.

He further emphasized that a secure and stable environment is essential for democracy to thrive, adding that security agencies have been directed to sustain and strengthen measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the country.

Nigerians were also urged to use the holiday as a moment for reflection and renewed commitment to national unity, lawful conduct, and responsible civic engagement, with a reminder that the strength of any democracy lies in the character and participation of its citizens.
