The governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, has announced a three-day public holiday to facilitate the distribution of N5.23 billion worth of palliatives to residents across the state’s 25 local government areas.

During a press conference at the Government House in Minna, Governor Bago emphasized that anyone found guilty of misappropriating the palliatives would face imprisonment.

The public holidays will run from Wednesday, September 6 to Friday, September 8. The state government has already received N2 billion and five trucks of rice from the federal government and is anticipating an additional N2 billion and 40,000 bags of maize.

As the state cannot wait for the federal government to deliver the balance while people are in need, it has chosen to supplement the palliatives to ensure they reach the grassroots. The distribution will involve public officials, civil servants, political appointees, political parties, and organized labor at the polling unit and ward level.

The governor outlined the distribution plan, with N10 million allocated to each ward in 21 local government areas and specific allocations for Bida, Suleja, Kontagora, and Chachanga local government areas. Additional funds were allocated to traditional institutions, IDPs, political parties, logistics, and security.

To ensure transparency, the governor emphasized that the funds would be transferred to local government accounts, and each locality would decide on the type of food items to purchase based on local preferences.
