The Abia State Government has taken the step of closing down 197 private schools for failing to meet the minimum standards set by the government. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, made this announcement while briefing journalists on the outcomes of the recent Executive Council Meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu, underscoring the administration’s commitment to education sector reform, noted that the shuttered schools did not meet the minimum required standards set by the government.

He further clarified that the ongoing initiative is a testament to the state government’s dedication to education reform, and approximately 900 schools have been inspected as part of the ongoing effort.

He said, “The inspection of schools is ongoing, at the last count, about 900 schools have been inspected. A few of the schools have not been so lucky, they fell short of the required standards and they were shut down.

“That exercise is ongoing and it speaks to the determination of the state government to reform the education sector.”
