BREAKING: Obi, LP Failed To Prove Tinubu Was Convicted In US – Tribunal Rules

The Presidential Election Petitions Court, on Wednesday, rendered a verdict stating that the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, did not succeed in proving that President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been convicted of money laundering in the United States.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, leading a five-member panel, declared that the petitioners, Obi and the LP, failed to present any evidence of criminal arrest or conviction against Tinubu.

Tinubu had faced allegations of forfeiting $460,000 in the US over three decades ago, with the petitioners accusing him of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.

However, the Tribunal determined that there were no criminal charges filed against Tinubu in the US, and he had not undergone any criminal trial in America.

Justice Tsammani pointed out that the petitioners could not prove that the incident at the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, where the forfeiture occurred, was indeed a criminal case.

He clarified that the former governor of Lagos State had not been convicted of any crime or engaged in any criminal activity, nor had he received any prison sentence or fines. Consequently, in accordance with Section 137 of the constitution, Tinubu remained eligible to contest the presidential election.
