Tragedy struck on Saturday when a plane attempting to land in stormy weather in Barcelos, a tourist town in the Brazilian Amazon, crashed, resulting in the loss of all 14 individuals on board.
The pilot, navigating through heavy rain and low visibility, unintentionally initiated the landing halfway down the runway, reported Vinicius Almeida, the security secretary of Amazonas state, during a press briefing.

The aircraft ran out of runway and tragically crashed, claiming the lives of 12 passengers and two crew members. Initial findings suggest that the passengers were Brazilian men heading to the region for sport fishing, as stated by the state government.
Governor Wilson Lima expressed his support and condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Our teams have been on the ground responding since the moment of the crash to provide the necessary support. My solidarity and prayers to the victims’ family and friends.”
Media footage depicted the small white plane with its nose embedded in the dense vegetation along a dirt track. The aircraft, an EMB-110 manufactured by the Brazilian company Embraer, was en route from Manaus, the state capital, to Barcelos, a flight of approximately 90 minutes.
Officials disclosed that two other aircraft attempting to land in Barcelos at the same time had to return to Manaus due to adverse weather conditions. Initial reports had suggested that there may have been US nationals on board, but Amazonas officials later confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated all victims were Brazilian.
The bodies of the victims will be transported to the state capital for identification on Sunday. Nighttime take-offs and landings are prohibited in the region, rendering immediate travel unfeasible.
Almeida stated, “An air force aircraft will leave Manaus tomorrow around 5:00 am” with investigators and emergency personnel. “The expectation is that tomorrow we’ll be able to bring the bodies to Manaus and immediately take them for forensics and then release them to the families.”
Barcelos, situated on the Rio Negro, an Amazon tributary, shares borders with various national parks and protected areas. It is presently the peak season for fishing, drawing enthusiasts keen on catching tropical river species like the peacock bass, known locally as “tucunare.”
Amazonas, covered predominantly by dense rainforest, is a hub for adventure travel and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, according to Amazonastur, the state tourism company.
