BREAKING: We Will Boycott Meeting With FG If ….. – NLC Issues Strong Threat

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that it may abstain from its scheduled meeting with the Federal Government on Monday, October 30, 2023, if the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, is in attendance.

Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, conveyed this ultimatum while addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, following a briefing on the challenges faced by workers in Imo State.

Ajaero criticized Lalong for his inability to foster a harmonious relationship with organized labor.

“Hopefully, we may meet tomorrow (Monday) with the Federal Government to see whether the agreement with organised labour on the fuel subsidy removal palliatives was met or not,” he said.

“If that meeting is to hold, it will be without the Minister of Labour and Employment, because we will not be part of any meeting with the Federal Government that the Minister of Labour and Employment will attend.”

The government and labor unions have been engaged in discussions regarding their planned industrial action in response to the removal of fuel subsidies.

During Sunday’s gathering, Ajaero also voiced a threat to mobilize union members to converge on Imo State on Wednesday, November 1.

The NLC leader accused the Imo State Government of infringing upon the rights of workers in the state. Ajaero decried what he perceived as Governor Hope Uzodimma’s neglect of their well-being, pointing out that many had passed away due to purported non-payment of their wages.

He enumerated a series of grievances against the Imo State Governor, including the alleged failure to implement prior agreements, particularly the accord reached on January 9, 2021. These grievances encompassed outstanding salary arrears spanning approximately 20 months, unjust classification of workers as non-existent, similar treatment of pensioners, and unsettled gratuity arrears, among other concerns.

Ajaero disclosed that roughly 10,000 pensioners had been erroneously labeled as nonexistent, resulting in over 22 months of unpaid pensions. Additionally, about 11,000 workers had been designated as ghost employees by the Imo State Government.

The NLC President also expressed frustration over the state government’s refusal to comply with the national minimum wage, contending that Governor Uzodinma had resisted employing social dialogue and collective bargaining to address these issues.
