A retired colonel, former minister of state for Defence, and former National Organising Secretary of the PDP, Akobundu replaces Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party, a former Senate Minority Chief Whip, who was ousted by the court.

This legal victory means that the PDP now holds a senatorial seat in Abia State. Orji Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) represents the northern senatorial district, and Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) holds the southern district seat.

Other senators who were also removed by court decisions include Elisha Abbo (Adamawa North), Abubakar Sadiku-Ohere (Kogi Central), and Simon Mwadkwon (Plateau North).
