Speaking on Channels Television, Briggs emphasized that President Tinubu’s decision could signal a shift toward regional governance, but stressed that such a major change should not be unilaterally decided by the president. She stated that if Nigeria were to return to regionalism, it would require input from all stakeholders, including citizens, and could not be decided solely by the president.

Briggs pointed out that the Ministry of Niger Delta was established by late President Umaru Yar’Adua for specific reasons, and simply abolishing it without proper consideration was problematic. She also raised concerns about the new Ministry of Regional Development, questioning how it would fund the various development commissions it oversees and whether the regions themselves would be responsible.

Furthermore, Briggs highlighted the longstanding neglect of the Niger Delta despite its significant contribution to the nation’s resources. She lamented that agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) had become vehicles for political gain rather than serving their intended purpose.

Briggs called for regions to be empowered to use their resources for local development, rather than relying on external agencies that have failed to deliver on their promises.
