The tragic incident occurred on the same date in 2014, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, when the Boko Haram terrorist group abducted the girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok.

According to a status report by the BringBackOurGirls campaign group in October 2022, of the 276 kidnapped girls, 57 escaped captivity by jumping from the trucks transporting them, 107 were released, 16 were rescued by the military, leaving 96 still missing.

However, Yakubu Nkeki, the leader of the Chibok Parents Association, disclosed that as of Thursday, 138 of the girls had been rescued or released, while 82 remained in captivity.

In a press release issued by Aisha Gambari, the Head of Communication at the US Embassy in Abuja, the United States emphasized its enduring commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in combating terrorism, holding perpetrators accountable, and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

“The United States remains dedicated to assisting Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and in safeguarding its people. We continue to stand by the Nigerian government’s ongoing initiatives to enhance security, prosecute attackers, and ensure the welfare of all citizens,” the statement read.
