Amid growing friction with the U.S., China is actively strengthening ties with other global partners. On Tuesday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held a phone discussion with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, during which both parties explored ways to deepen China-EU economic cooperation.

According to an official Chinese release, Minister Wang criticized the U.S. tariff policy as detrimental to the global trading system and stressed the need for multilateral collaboration to preserve a rules-based international trade framework. The two sides agreed to initiate dialogue on market access and improving the business climate for enterprises operating across both regions.

China remains a key trading partner for the European Union, ranking as the EU’s third-largest export destination and its largest source of imports in 2024. However, the EU continues to face a significant trade imbalance, with last year’s deficit reaching approximately €300 billion (about $329 billion).

In contrast, China has temporarily suspended tariff measures for certain other countries, as it navigates the complex landscape of global trade partnerships amid intensifying geopolitical and economic pressures.
