Scarlett Johansson will play a key role at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Aoth as a leading actress and a debuting director, according to the line-up announced by festival organizers on Thursday.

Festival officials reaffirmed their commitment to amplifying the voices of female filmmakers, amid growing calls for the industry to address gender disparities and tackle misconduct. At a press conference in Paris, Festival President Iris Knobloch acknowledged the findings of a recent parliamentary report on abuse in the entertainment sector, stating: “Women are no longer asking for a place; they are claiming it. We are proud to spotlight their talents and perspectives.”

Despite these efforts, the main competition remains predominantly male, with just six films by female directors among the roughly 20 announced by Festival Director Thierry Fremaux.

Notably, Amélie Bonnin, a relatively unknown French director, will make history by opening the festival on May 13 with her debut feature, Leave One Day—marking the first time a debut film has opened Cannes.

A-List Line-Up and Festival Highlights

This year’s competition boasts a strong slate of internationally acclaimed filmmakers. Wes Anderson, Iran’s Jafar Panahi, the Dardenne brothers, and Richard Linklater are among the notable names. Panahi, who continues to face governmental restrictions in Iran, will present A Simple Accident but requested that details about the film remain confidential due to political pressures.

Other highly anticipated entries include Eddington by American horror director Ari Aster, starring Joaquin Phoenix, and The Mastermind, a heist thriller from Kelly Reichardt featuring John Magaro.

The French contingent includes Cédric Klapisch, Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau, and Hafsia Herzi, all aiming to replicate the success of last year’s winner, Anora by Sean Baker.

Juliette Binoche will serve as jury president, taking the reins from Greta Gerwig. Meanwhile, Robert De Niro is set to receive an honorary Palme d’Or, and Tom Cruise will attend the world premiere of the final Mission: Impossible installment.

Documentaries and Social Spotlight

This year’s documentary selection features Bono: Stories of Surrender, centered on the U2 frontman, and Orwell, a political exploration by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck.

Also featured in the “Un Certain Regard” section is Once Upon a Time in Gaza, a powerful narrative on friendship and violence set in the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip, by Palestinian twin filmmakers Tarzan and Arab Nasser.

MeToo Movement and Industry Reckoning

The festival’s launch is taking place amid heightened attention on #MeToo-related issues within the French entertainment industry. A recent parliamentary inquiry described the sector as plagued by “systemic and persistent” abuse, according to MP Sandrine Rousseau, who urged Cannes to lead by example.

“The festival must be where this cultural shift begins. Beneath the glamour, we need to send a clear message that change is overdue,” she stated.

Adding further gravity, May 13—the festival’s opening day—coincides with the verdict in the sexual assault trial of Gérard Depardieu, a legendary figure in French cinema now facing serious allegations. Depardieu, who denies accusations from two women dating back to 2021, is the most prominent figure to face legal scrutiny in France’s response to the global reckoning on sexual misconduct.

Cannes 2024 promises a compelling mix of artistry, social commentary, and cultural reflection—both on screen and behind the scenes.
