NBA Election: Badejo-Okusanya Pulls Further Ahead

According to Ireporter Online, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has significantly widened her lead in the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, bringing her closer to making history as the association’s first elected female president.

Badejo-Okusanya is seeking to succeed the incumbent NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN. Results displayed on the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) election portal as of 9:00 p.m. showed she had secured 10,554 votes, accounting for 46.16 per cent of the ballots counted.

Her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, had garnered 7,020 votes, while Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, polled 5,289 votes, representing 23.13 per cent of the votes counted.

The latest figures indicated that a total of 22,863 votes had been recorded, with Badejo-Okusanya maintaining a commanding lead of more than 3,500 votes over Akangbe. The margin represented a notable improvement from the earlier results announced during the day.

Earlier updates released at about 11:33 a.m. showed Badejo-Okusanya leading with 4,860 votes, equivalent to 41.77 per cent of the ballots counted at the time. Akangbe followed with 3,851 votes, representing 33.10 per cent, while Akinboro had secured 2,924 votes, amounting to 25.13 per cent.

The steady increase in her vote tally suggests that Badejo-Okusanya continued to strengthen her position as additional ballots were processed.

Established in 1933, the Nigerian Bar Association is the umbrella body for legal practitioners in the country and has historically been led by male presidents. If eventually declared the winner, Badejo-Okusanya will become the first woman to be elected president of the association, marking a landmark moment in its history.

As of the time this report was filed, the Electoral Committee had yet to officially announce the final outcome of the election.
