CISLAC Condemns Hijacking of Protests, Blames Government

Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has raised concerns about the hijacking of #EndBadGovernance protests by criminal elements and political actors. In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Rafsanjani, emphasized the need to protect peaceful protesters and condemned the government’s role in exacerbating the situation.

Rafsanjani expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security landscape and the influence of non-state actors, particularly in states like Kano. He highlighted that the CISLAC situation room observed political interference affecting security operatives, resulting in inadequate protection for peaceful protesters.

“The peaceful demonstrations by Nigerians, initially intended to express legitimate grievances, have unfortunately been hijacked and turned into violent chaos. Criminal elements are exploiting the protests to create further unrest and undermine public safety,” Rafsanjani stated.

CISLAC urged the government to refrain from politicizing security measures, especially in Kano, and to prioritize the protection of lives and properties. Rafsanjani emphasized that the violence and destruction currently witnessed are contrary to the intentions of the peaceful protesters.

“Reckless and provocative statements by public officials can incite Nigerians to take to the streets. Such statements undermine the legitimacy of the protesters’ concerns and should be avoided,” he said.

Rafsanjani criticized the government’s alleged sponsorship of counter-protests aimed at undermining the legitimate demonstrations. “The government’s actions have endangered peaceful protesters, leading to attacks and hijacking by thugs and non-state actors,” he said.

CISLAC highlighted its previous calls for the government to ensure the protection of peaceful protesters, suggesting that proper implementation of such measures could have prevented the current chaos.

“We have observed troubling trends and urge genuine protesters to continue their demonstrations peacefully to prevent criminals from exploiting the situation. We appeal to all Nigerians to avoid any violent, criminal, and political destruction. The protests, meant to address legitimate concerns, should not be equated with criminal activities and violence,” Rafsanjani said.

CISLAC remains committed to advocating for the protection of citizens’ rights and ensuring that their voices are heard in a safe and peaceful manner. The organization called on the government to take immediate action to safeguard protesters and to refrain from actions that could incite further violence.

Voices from the Protest

Amidst the turmoil, protesters in Ojota, Lagos, voiced their frustration and determination. Nkechi, a student, said, “We are here to demand better governance and accountability. It’s disheartening to see our peaceful protest turned into chaos by those who don’t share our vision.”

Another protester, Sani, a local trader, added, “The government should listen to our grievances instead of trying to silence us with force. We want a better Nigeria for everyone.”

The #EndBadGovernance movement has drawn attention to significant issues facing the country, and despite the challenges, protesters remain resolute in their mission for change. The call for protection and genuine dialogue remains paramount as the nation navigates this critical period.
