Coup: New Development Emerge From Niger As Junta Shuts Airspace

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicates that there are currently no aircraft operating in Niger’s airspace.

The regional bloc of West African countries, known as Ecowas, had previously issued a warning that they might resort to using force if President Mohamed Bazoum was not reinstated by 23:00 GMT on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the junta stated that Niger’s armed forces are fully prepared to defend the nation.

President Bazoum was detained on 26 July, and shortly after, Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, commander of the presidential guard, declared himself the new leader.

The military coup has drawn condemnation from various international actors, including France, the European Union, the United Nations, and the United States.

In a national television statement on Sunday, the junta representative revealed that they had information suggesting that a foreign power was planning to attack Niger. In response to the crisis, Ecowas military chiefs held a meeting in Nigeria and developed a detailed plan for the potential use of force.

Despite the ultimatum set by Ecowas, demanding the junta relinquish power by midnight local time, the coup leaders have not shown any willingness to step down. Thousands of their supporters gathered defiantly at a stadium in the capital city, Niamey, demonstrating their unwavering stance.

Burkina Faso and Mali, two of Niger’s neighboring countries and fellow Ecowas members, warned that any outside military intervention in Niger would be considered “a declaration of war” against them. Both Burkina Faso and Mali have been suspended from the regional bloc due to their military juntas.

Niger holds significance as a major producer of uranium, a crucial fuel for nuclear power, and was a key ally in the fight against Islamist militants in the Sahel region of West Africa during President Bazoum’s leadership.
