Crisis Talks Begin! Health Minister In Emergency Meeting With Furious Nurses, Midwives
The Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, on Friday, held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) alongside officials from the Ministry of Labour, according to iReporter Online.
The meeting, which was part of the ongoing negotiation efforts, comes as nurses and midwives across public health institutions continue a nationwide warning strike that began on July 29, 2025.
The strike, expected to last until August 5, follows what the union describes as the government’s failure to address a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025, according to iReporter Online.
The union’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, reiterated that the strike was the result of years of neglect and unfulfilled promises, emphasizing that their demands—ranging from a separate salary structure and improved allowances to the mass employment of nurses—remain unresolved.
He stated that the strike action was not a hasty decision but rather a last resort driven by frustration among rank-and-file members, according to iReporter Online.
