Crocodile Attack Claims Life Of 16-Year-Old Boy In Boat Breaks Down

The tragic event unfolded on Thursday near Saibai Island, a remote island with a population of approximately 500 people. Situated close to Papua New Guinea, Saibai Island falls under the jurisdiction of the Australian state of Queensland, about 560 miles north of Cairns.

Reports from local media outlet Brisbane Times indicate that the victim was swimming alongside a 13-year-old boy before the attack occurred. The pair had encountered trouble with their dinghy’s engine, prompting them to brave the waters and attempt to swim ashore.

According to Queensland Police’s Far North District Senior Sergeant Greg Giles, the older boy disappeared after the two ventured into waist-deep water.

“Unfortunately the older boy’s body was located in the mangroves,” Giles stated, expressing condolences to the victim’s family and friends.

The 13-year-old, who was close to the victim at the time of the incident, did not witness the crocodile attack.

Authorities have determined that the victim’s injuries are consistent with a crocodile attack, estimating the reptile to be nearly four yards in length.

Responding to community concerns, the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) has initiated efforts to locate and remove the crocodile involved in the tragic event. Wildlife officers will conduct surveys of the waters around Saibai Island by helicopter in an attempt to locate the reptile.

As the investigation continues, DESI extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the teenager who lost his life in this tragic incident.
