Dangote Refinery Marks Milestone By Exporting Fuel To West African Nations
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially commenced the export of refined petroleum products to West African countries, marking a significant shift in the region’s fuel market. a tanker recently transported a shipment of gasoline from the Dangote Refinery to near Togo.
The vessel, named CL Jane Austen, carried over 300,000 barrels of fuel to the region. This move follows earlier statements by Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Chairman of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority, who expressed Ghana’s intention to source petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery. Abdul-Hamid highlighted that importing fuel from Nigeria, rather than Europe, could save Ghana up to $400 million a month and reduce freight costs, ultimately lowering the prices of goods and services in the country.
In line with this that the refinery is preparing to export fuel to other African nations, including South Africa, Angola, and Namibia. Negotiations with Niger Republic, Chad, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic are also ongoing. A source close to the refinery confirmed that discussions with Ghana, Angola, Namibia, and South Africa are in advanced stages.
The gasoline shipment is currently anchored off the coast of Togo, a common location for ship-to-ship fuel transfers. While the destination of the cargo is unclear, these transfers often lead to fuel being redirected to other markets.
Although the shipment size is relatively small on a global scale, it highlights the refinery’s increasing production capacity and potential to disrupt the regional fuel market. Previously, the refinery had shipped its first gasoline cargo to Lagos, marking the beginning of its domestic fuel distribution. It remains to be seen whether a larger portion of the refinery’s output will be directed to exports in the future.
