“Deradicalization Camp In Gombe: FG Accused Of Inadequate Compensation”
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has voiced dissatisfaction over what he described as inadequate compensation from the Federal Government following the conversion of Gombe State’s NYSC Orientation Camp in Malam-Sidi into a deradicalization facility for repentant Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor during a courtesy visit by an administrative assessment team from Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, stated that while Gombe State has remained fully committed to the deradicalization programme as part of its national responsibility, it feels shortchanged by the Federal Government’s compensation of only N1.4 billion.
According to iReporter Online, the Governor had anticipated compensation that reflected the current value of the converted facility, which has now been operational for over six years.
Professor Njodi further revealed that the State Government has already allocated over N5 billion for the construction of a new NYSC Orientation Camp.
In the interim, the State was compelled to relocate students from Amada Girls Secondary School—currently hosting the NYSC programme—to Government Girls Secondary School, Doma.
According to iReporter Online, despite the support given to the OPSC programme, the State Government believes more recognition and financial backing are warranted, especially considering the scale of the State’s contributions and sacrifices.
During the visit, Rear Admiral Suleiman H. Abdullahi, who led the OPSC team along with Maj. Gen. Yusuf Ali and other top officers, emphasized that the Gombe deradicalization centre is a unique model within the country.
He said the team was in the State to interact with key stakeholders, assess the facility’s functionality, and ensure it aligns with the goals of Operation Safe Corridor.
The OPSC also called for deeper collaboration with both the State Government and the host community to ensure continued success.
