According to reports, the victims were returning to Doma in Nasarawa State after a visit to the Ocholonya market when their wooden boat capsized. A local resident, Adanyi, shared details of the tragic event with journalists in Makurdi, explaining that Saturday was market day in Ocholonya, and the boat was carrying women and children back to Odenyi in Nasarawa State when the accident took place.

On Sunday, Agatu Local Government Chairman Melvin James spoke with Daily Trust and confirmed that the victims were traders from Apochi and Odenyi communities in Doma, Nasarawa State. “I have been informed about the incident, and reports suggest that over 20 people might have lost their lives. Local divers have recovered several bodies, but we are awaiting a formal update to confirm the exact toll,” he said.

James also mentioned that efforts are underway to collaborate with Nasarawa State officials to support the affected families, and the Nigerian Navy has been contacted to assist with the search and rescue operation.

Attempts to reach Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
