The Nigeria Police Force has responded to widespread criticism over a viral video showing Vincent Makinde in chains, clarifying that the former officer was restrained due to his violent behavior and history of escaping custody…..READ MOREĀ
In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police stated that Makinde, dismissed in 2022 for serious misconduct including extortion, dereliction of duty, and abuse of office, was rearrested in June 2024 for impersonating a police officer. He had previously escaped custody after assaulting a senior officer.
Adejobi explained that Makinde was restrained as a precaution due to his aggressive nature, a measure deemed necessary for the safety of officers and others. He emphasized that using restraining devices aligns with global best practices for managing violent individuals in custody.
The statement added that Makinde had been impersonating an Assistant Superintendent of Police while armed, further justifying his detention and restraint. Investigations into his impersonation and other alleged offenses are ongoing.
The police reiterated their commitment to accountability and justice, emphasizing that no officer or individual is above the law.
