the very people they are supposed to protect.
In an interview with News Central on December 17, 2024, Sanusi voiced concerns over the resurgence of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), despite the government’s claim that the unit was disbanded. He highlighted reports of young men being targeted, especially those with good clothes or expensive mobile phones, by police officers who operate in plain clothes and use heavy-handed tactics.
“The brutality persists,” Sanusi stated. “When SARS was disbanded, we hoped for change, but it seems the unit is coming back through the backdoor. People are still being arrested by police in mufti, conducting operations like commando-style raids.” He went on to criticize the police for using arbitrary arrests as an excuse to extort money from citizens.
Sanusi also expressed disappointment that the Nigerian government has failed to hold the police accountable for these ongoing abuses. “The police are supposed to serve and protect, not oppress the public,” he said. He called for continued pressure on the government to reform the police force, increase their pay, and recruit individuals of integrity to help restore the institution’s credibility.
He concluded by urging Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain persistent in their quest for justice, stressing that the government must listen to their demands and work towards a real solution to police brutality.
Sanusi promised that Amnesty International would continue amplifying the voices of Nigerians and advocating for genuine police reforms.
