I Was Dying Inside’ – Bovi Opens Up On Hosting Event Weeks After Mother’s D**th
Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi has opened up about the emotional struggles he endured while continuing to perform professionally during some of the most difficult moments of his life.
According to Ireporter Online, Bovi shared the experience during an appearance on the Nancy Isime Show, where he recalled performing at events while dealing with the kidnapping of his mother and, later, her death.
The comedian revealed that his mother was kidnapped in 2012 while he was attending an event in Ilashe, Lagos. He said he received the distressing news during the programme but had to continue working despite being deeply concerned about her safety.
Bovi explained that after making several calls to establish what was happening, he returned to the event and continued entertaining guests.
Although he remained on stage professionally, the comedian said his mind and emotions were consumed by the situation involving his mother.
He recalled that he was essentially performing mechanically, with guests laughing and enjoying themselves while he remained mentally preoccupied with the crisis.
His mother was eventually rescued several hours later.
Bovi also spoke about the emotional challenge he faced after his mother died in January 2016. He revealed that just weeks after her death, he was booked to host the 60th birthday celebration of businessman and politician Ben Bruce.
The comedian said he initially struggled with whether to accept the engagement because he wondered if returning to work so soon after his mother’s death would make him appear insensitive.
He eventually decided to honour the booking and took to the stage to perform his professional duties despite still grieving privately.
Bovi said the audience had no idea about the pain he was experiencing internally as he hosted the celebration and made people laugh.
The comedian’s account highlighted the often-hidden emotional burden entertainers can carry while maintaining a professional appearance in public, even during periods of personal loss and distress.
