DSS Denies Allegations of Involvement in NLC Headquarters Raid

Development that has stirred significant controversy, the Department of State Services (DSS) has unequivocally denied any involvement in the alleged raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja. This denial comes in the wake of accusations from the NLC, which claimed that a troop of heavily armed security operatives had invaded its office located in the Central Business District of Abuja.

The NLC, in a statement signed by Comrade Benson Upah, Head of Media and Public Relations, expressed deep concern over what it described as an alarming invasion of its premises by federal security agents. The statement, which was shared on the union’s official X handle on Wednesday, called for the immediate withdrawal of the armed agents from the Labour House. The NLC also emphasized the need for the federal government to respect the sanctity of its offices and the rights of its members.

In response to these serious allegations, the DSS took to its official X handle on Thursday to refute the claims. The security agency asserted that it did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja, urging the public to disregard the reports. “Please kindly note that the Service (DSS) did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja,” the DSS stated, aiming to set the record straight amidst the growing public concern.

The alleged invasion has drawn widespread criticism from various quarters, with many questioning the necessity and motive behind such an action, if true. Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker and a vocal critic of government overreach, was among those who condemned the incident. He described the invasion of the NLC headquarters as “needless, unconscionable, and condemnable,” reflecting the sentiments of many who believe that the use of force against a workers’ union is unjustified.
