FG Cancels Subsidized Rice Sale to Public Servants Amid Nationwide Protests

Unexpected move, the Federal Government has halted the sale of subsidized 50-kilogramme bags of rice to public servants, which were initially priced at N40,000 each. This decision was communicated through a circular titled “Withdrawal of internal circular on sale of subsidized rice to public servants,” issued on August 2, 2024, during the second day of the “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” protests.

The sale of the subsidized rice had only just been announced on August 1, 2024, by the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Human Resources Management Department. However, the same ministry quickly retracted the offer without providing any explanation for the sudden reversal.
