Ajayi argued that any delays could replicate the prolonged passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which took over two decades, resulting in missed revenue, stunted investments, and job losses in the oil and gas sector.

“It’s misleading to claim the Tax Reform Bills are being rushed. The reforms reflect over a year of meticulous work, and delaying them would be a disservice to the country,” Ajayi stated.

Concerns About Legislative Pace

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns over the swift legislative progress of the bills. Speaking with BBC Hausa, Zulum cautioned that a rushed process could undermine the reforms’ long-term benefits.

“The Petroleum Industry Bill took nearly 20 years to pass, yet these tax reforms are receiving attention within a week. We must tread carefully to ensure these reforms benefit future generations,” Zulum said.
