The regional organization described these claims as “unfounded” and reaffirmed its solidarity with Nigeria and other ECOWAS nations.

The accusations surfaced amid rising tensions in the region following Niger’s military coup in 2023, which has strained its relationships with neighboring countries and ECOWAS.

In a statement released on Thursday, ECOWAS categorically denied the allegations, labeling them as baseless. “The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States expresses serious concern over the allegations directed at Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states,” it stated.

“The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and ECOWAS member countries against claims that they are involved in sponsoring terrorism. ECOWAS highlighted the recent achievements of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which Nigeria leads, as evidence of the country’s commitment to regional stability.

“ECOWAS firmly rejects any notion that a nation with such a history of generosity and support would engage in state-sponsored terrorism,” the statement continued.

Furthermore, ECOWAS urged all countries in the region to foster dialogue and stability, cautioning against making unfounded accusations lacking supporting evidence.
