EFCC Cracks Down on Cybercriminals Hiding in Presidential Library Facility

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its recent operation at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta was aimed at apprehending internet fraudsters, not targeting the library itself.

The commission announced that 23 suspected cybercriminals will be arraigned before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday, August 15, 2025. The suspects were among 93 individuals arrested during a sting operation at a hotel within the OOPL premises.

A statement released on the EFCC’s official X account indicated that intelligence linked the suspects to crimes including identity theft, impersonation, and other forms of internet fraud. Many of the arrested individuals have already been indicted following profiling and interrogation.

The operation coincided with a pool party reportedly organized to celebrate the suspects’ illicit activities. Initially scheduled at two separate venues, the event was relocated to the OOPL hotel to evade law enforcement detection.

EFCC officials emphasized that the library itself was not the focus of the raid, and the action targeted only the individuals involved. Some suspects have confessed to participating in online scams, while others are expected to be arraigned in subsequent batches.
