Enugu Left Powerless! Disco Says Reduced Tariffs And Low Supply Behind Blackout

Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has attributed the ongoing power outage in parts of Enugu State over the last four days to a drastic drop in energy supply from its parent provider, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), according to IReporter Online.

In an official announcement on Monday, MEDL explained that the disruption stems from the recent implementation of a new Tariff Order issued by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), which reduced the tariff for Band A customers from N209.50/kWh to N160.40/kWh.

According to IReporter Online, this tariff cut forced EEDC to reevaluate its business model, concluding that continuing operations under the new pricing structure would lead to losses exceeding N1 billion monthly.

As a result, EEDC slashed energy supply to MEDL by 50%, significantly affecting power distribution in many areas across Enugu. MEDL clarified that it does not source electricity directly from the national grid but depends entirely on EEDC, which holds a vesting contract with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET).

“This has unfortunately resulted in MEDL receiving only about 50% of its usual energy allocation,” the company stated, adding that it regrets the inconvenience to customers.

Efforts to resolve the issue are underway, with MEDL actively engaging stakeholders including EEDC, EERC, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian System Operator (NISO), and NBET.

The company expressed optimism that a resolution will be achieved within 48 hours or shortly afterward.

According to IReporter Online, MEDL acknowledged delays in communicating the development to customers, citing the suddenness of the situation.

The company has called for calm and understanding, assuring affected residents that every measure is being taken to restore power as quickly as possible.
