Osodeke, the National President of ASUU, expressed deep concern that if the trend continues, Nigerian universities will soon be plagued by an overwhelming shortage of skilled educators.

Osodeke explained that the financial struggles faced by lecturers are pushing many to seek greener pastures overseas. He emphasized that without urgent intervention, the academic workforce in Nigeria will be left alarmingly underqualified. “The government owes us months of arrears and wages, making it harder for lecturers to survive,” Osodeke stated. “The situation is dire, with only a few qualified educators remaining in our institutions.”

He also pointed out that the establishment of new universities has not been matched by adequate staffing. “We have seen a surge in the number of universities, but the issue of having enough qualified lecturers has been overlooked,” he said. “If this trend continues, Nigerian universities will soon struggle to offer quality education.”

The challenges go beyond staffing, with rising living costs contributing to the strain on both lecturers and students. Osodeke revealed that many lecturers are finding it difficult to make ends meet, with the rising cost of fuel, electricity, and other essentials. “How are students managing to get to school under these circumstances? It’s a question that we must all reflect on,” he added.
