the need to preserve African cultural heritage, warning against its potential extinction.
Obasanjo underscored the importance of protecting Yoruba culture, which he described as “authentic.” He reminded the audience that before the arrival of Christianity and Islam, the Yoruba had Ifa Orunmila, conveying the belief that “It is Heaven that knows who will be saved.”
These remarks were delivered in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he was celebrating the 50th birthday of renowned female talking drummer Olamuyiwa Aralola, affectionately known as Ara, at the Green Legacy Hotel and Resort, situated within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
By honoring Ara, Obasanjo aimed to recognize her significant contributions to the preservation of Yoruba culture, especially in the traditionally male-dominated art of talking drums. He stated, “We must work to preserve our culture. Ara is a woman of culture, our cultural ambassador, who has excelled in an area once thought to be solely for men.”
Reflecting on societal changes, Obasanjo noted that while parents once disapproved of their sons playing football, they now actively encourage it. He remarked, “Whatever you are involved in, whether dancing or playing football, excel at it and invite me to your celebrations. We cannot neglect our culture. Our language, food, and attire are becoming marginalized, and we must resist this.”
Despite identifying as a Christian, Obasanjo affirmed his commitment to his cultural roots. “I am a Christian who attended two churches today, yet I refuse to forget my heritage. Anyone who belittles Ifa is a fool,” he declared.
In response, Ara expressed her gratitude for the honor bestowed upon her, mentioning her early start in playing talking drums at age 10 in her father’s palace in Ondo, and urging parents to make every effort to preserve their cultural traditions.
