FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday To Honour Buhari’s Legacy

The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness.

The announcement, made through a statement by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, via the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, comes as part of the seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the statement, the public holiday is a gesture of respect and remembrance for Buhari’s dedicated service to Nigeria and his contributions to democratic governance, unity, and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national unity and progress,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on his life and the values he upheld.”

Citizens are encouraged to mark the day by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity, in alignment with the vision the former president championed throughout his years of public service.

As part of the mourning observance, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast until the end of the seven-day period, beginning Sunday, July 13.

The Federal Government also extended its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
