The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) commenced a period of mourning on Monday for the 17 military personnel brutally killed by angry youths in Okuama village, Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.

Furthermore, the Defence Headquarters has released the names of the 17 military personnel who lost their lives during the attack last Thursday while on a peace mission to mediate between warring communities in the region.

Following this tragic incident, the Defence Headquarters revealed that among the casualties were 17 personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 other members of the battalion.

The brutal killings have elicited widespread condemnation from Nigerian authorities. President Bola Tinubu denounced the attack as an assault on the nation and issued directives to security agencies to apprehend those responsible for orchestrating the violence.

In his statement, President Tinubu expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, assuring that the military leadership is actively responding to the incident. He emphasized that the perpetrators of this reprehensible crime will face the full force of justice.
