In a post on his Truth Social feed, Trump announced, “Due to the Arctic blast sweeping the country, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, along with prayers and speeches, to take place in the Capitol Rotunda.”

The venue change is significant as the Rotunda can only accommodate a limited number of people, unlike the open National Mall, where past inaugurations have drawn crowds of thousands. The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., on Monday predicts freezing temperatures and strong winds.

This is the first time since Ronald Reagan’s 1985 inauguration that such an emergency measure has been taken due to harsh weather. Trump mentioned that key dignitaries and guests will attend the indoor event, which will include prayers, the inaugural address, and the national anthem.

Despite the weather, Trump announced that the event would be live-streamed at Washington’s Capital One Arena, where supporters can watch the proceedings and participate in the Presidential Parade. Trump, at 78, the oldest person to assume the presidency, expressed that the event will be “beautiful” for both attendees and TV audiences.

Before the change, over 220,000 tickets were distributed, but with the shift to an indoor location, most attendees will have to view the ceremony on screen. For those braving the cold, there will still be a chance to catch a glimpse of the president-elect as he travels from the Capitol to the White House.

Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 saw controversy over crowd size comparisons with Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration. This time, the absence of a massive crowd on the National Mall will shift the focus to TV broadcasts and the arena, which holds around 20,000 people.

Despite the weather disruptions, Trump’s supporters remain excited about the event. Matthew Medill, a Trump supporter from California, noted that while some may be disappointed, the excitement and joy will still be palpable.
