Fresh Details Surface As Obazee Panel Hunts ‘Conspirators’ In Alleged N7tr Frauds Linked to Emefiele
Nigeria may be on the brink of uncovering one of its largest financial frauds in history, with an estimated sum of over N7 trillion at stake.
A dedicated team of investigators, appointed by President Bola Tinubu to examine the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) activities under suspended governor Godwin Emefiele, is racing against time to untangle a complex web of alleged financial misconduct spanning nine years.
The investigation, which began after Tinubu appointed former CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), Jim Obazee, as the “Special Investigator” for the CBN and related entities in July, has since grown to include prominent Nigerian auditors and fraud detectives. The team is delving into the financial system, with a particular focus on the activities during Emefiele’s tenure.

Recent reports suggest that the investigators are meticulously scrutinizing documents, memos, and oral confessions, potentially leading to more arrests in the near future. Although certain claims remain unverified, there are indications that some of Nigeria’s foreign missions in the Gulf region may have been entangled in these illicit transactions to legitimize financial crimes.
The involvement of international financial watchdogs in the inquiry remains uncertain. However, it is likely that several foreign banks will be contacted as part of this expansive investigation. Within Nigeria, there is growing apprehension among regulatory officials, particularly directors believed to have played significant roles in approving certain deals.
While there is a possibility of imminent arrests, a reliable source emphasizes that the panel’s main objective is not hasty apprehensions, but rather to conclude the investigation and present a comprehensive report detailing how the financial system was mismanaged and regulations compromised. This report will guide decisions on rectifying the system.
During his inaugural address, Tinubu pledged to initiate a thorough cleanup of the monetary authority. This commitment led to Emefiele’s suspension and subsequent arrest. Tinubu later referred to the financial system supervised by Emefiele for nine years as “rotten.” However, revelations from the panel indicate that the extent of corruption might be even greater than initially suspected.
The investigative team, led by Jim Obazee, is determined to pursue justice and hold those responsible accountable. Obazee, known for his no-nonsense approach to regulation, has a reputation for resisting attempts at bribery and maintaining the integrity of the financial system. The panel’s work, however, is not without resistance, as influential figures attempt to influence or restrict the investigation.
Names of prominent politicians and business figures are emerging as potential culprits. Some sources suggest that political pressure may be exerted to obstruct the inquiry. Nevertheless, Obazee and his team have reportedly gathered substantial evidence of wrongdoing, potentially leading to numerous prosecutions if allowed to proceed.
The investigation is focusing on disbursements through various CBN intervention programs and foreign exchange management. So far, over N7 trillion in fraud has been uncovered, directly linked to the embattled CBN governor. Many bank executives are also being questioned regarding their involvement in certain transactions.
Despite intense pressure, those directly involved in the investigation remain resolute in their commitment to see the process through. Additionally, there have been reports of evidence destruction both within and outside CBN offices, which has slowed down some aspects of the investigation.
As the scope of the investigation expands, concerns are growing within the financial sector, especially among those implicated as potential collaborators. The full list of individuals working with Obazee has not been disclosed, but they are known to possess impressive credentials in areas such as fraud investigation, forensic audit, banking, and international finance.
In the coming weeks, it is anticipated that repercussions will be felt across various sectors. The extent of the malpractice suggests that a single individual could not have orchestrated it alone, implying that those who worked alongside him were not entirely blameless. The scale of sanctions remains uncertain, but many are expected to face consequences.
With the detention and questioning of Obiora and Ahmad, Nigerians are beginning to grasp the depth of the misconduct within the system. Obazee, known for his cautious approach, has kept a low profile even among close associates since taking on this assignment.
Efforts to reach him have been unsuccessful, suggesting that he is maintaining a discreet stance in the face of mounting pressure. The investigation’s outcome remains uncertain, but it has already revealed a staggering level of financial impropriety within the system.
