During the opening of a regional conference focused on climate change-induced conflicts in Northern Nigeria, which was attended by representatives from the 19 Northern State governments, religious leaders, and various agencies, he highlighted that rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, and extreme weather events are immediate concerns rather than future possibilities.

The governor cautioned that desertification is transforming once-fertile lands into barren wastelands, with diminishing rivers and escalating deforestation serving as clear indicators of the pressing need for action, particularly in light of the recent floods that have affected many areas in Nigeria, including Kaduna.

“These environmental changes are causing severe disruptions to livelihoods, displacing communities, and intensifying competition for scarce resources like water, arable land, and food,” he stated.

As natural resources dwindle, Senator Sani warned that tensions will inevitably rise, with farmer-herder conflicts exemplifying how environmental stress can trigger violence.

He pointed out the vulnerability of Northern Nigeria’s agrarian communities, largely made up of farmers and pastoralists, who are experiencing significant losses due to adverse climate conditions and livestock diseases.

Despite these challenges, he urged resilience among the people, calling for collective efforts to devise strategies that address immediate needs while also preparing for future climate challenges.

Governor Sani appealed to individuals, communities, organizations, and nations to strengthen their resilience against disasters and crises, advising that they should anticipate, prepare for, mitigate, and recover from the impacts of shocks and stresses without jeopardizing their long-term potential.
