Gunmen Storm Anambra Police Station, Two Officers Killed
Gunmen suspected of being secessionist elements attacked the Umunze police station in Anambra State on Monday, resulting in the death of two police officers. The attackers, who opened fire indiscriminately, also set a building on the police station’s premises ablaze.
Umunze, located in Anambra South Senatorial District near the Imo State border, has recently seen a series of similar attacks on police facilities under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, Mr. Obono Itam. Many officers have lost their lives in these incidents.
In response to the attack, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that some improvised explosive devices were recovered from the scene. The police have mobilized joint security forces, including the Army, Navy, and Civil Defence, to track down the assailants.
“The attackers, identified as members of an armed secessionist group, used improvised explosives and fired sporadically, causing significant damage,” Ikenga said. “Two officers, who were on duty during the assault, lost their lives while trying to defend the station. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue.”
Commissioner of Police Itam has visited the scene to assess the situation and review security measures. The police are urging anyone with information about the attackers to come forward, assuring that such information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
