HIV-Positive Man Arrested For Assaulting Sickle-Cell Teenager In Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 34-year-old man, Peter Ugan, for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old girl, Ngozi (surname withheld), in Mabushi, Abuja. Ugan, a front desk officer at a local eatery, is accused of luring the teenager into a room, attacking her, and leaving her with severe injuries…READ MORE…
Reports indicate that Ugan, during police investigations, tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), raising grave concerns about the consequences of his actions.
Details of the Incident
Ngozi, who recently moved to Abuja from Port Harcourt to enroll in school, was staying in the same compound as Ugan’s friend. On January 6, 2025, Ugan allegedly called the girl on the pretext of asking her to buy sachet water. Upon her return, he dragged her into the room, assaulted her, and left her bleeding heavily.
After the incident, Ugan reportedly locked her in the room and went to purchase medications to stop the bleeding. He then attempted to clean her up before allowing her to leave.
Ngozi’s mother, Elizabeth Aroh, discovered her injuries and raised the alarm, leading to Ugan’s capture by a mob. He narrowly escaped lynching when police intervened.
Medical Intervention and Investigation
Ngozi was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where she underwent surgery due to the severity of her injuries and received two pints of blood. Investigations revealed that Ugan was HIV-positive. This revelation has compounded the emotional and physical distress faced by Ngozi and her family.
Conflicting Statements
During interrogation, Ugan claimed ignorance of his HIV status, stating he had been tested six months earlier and was unaware of being infected. He also alleged that Ngozi was his girlfriend, a claim the victim’s family vehemently denied.
Ugan narrated his version of events, alleging that the encounter was consensual and that he used a condom to avoid pregnancy. He claimed he only learned of Ngozi’s virginity during the act and purchased medications for her afterward.
However, when questioned about his actions, Ugan admitted to noticing her pain and stiffness but continued regardless. He also stated he was unaware of her sickle-cell condition until informed at the police station.
Police Response
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has directed a thorough investigation into the case. Efforts are underway to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
This distressing case highlights the urgent need for heightened awareness and stronger measures to protect vulnerable individuals from such atrocities.
