How Terrorists Overpowered 65 Army Troops, Policemen, Civil Defence Officers To Sack Kuje Prison In Abuja – Aregbesola Speaks

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has revealed how terrorists who attacked the Kuje Correctional Centre overpowered a total of 65 security personnel including 31 Nigerian Army troops during the attack.

The minister claimed that the personnel, which comprised the Army, Air Force, NSCDC and others were heavily armed but failed to defend the facilities as they were disarmed by the terrorists, Daily Post reports.

Aregbesola made the claim when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence on Monday.

He told the lawmakers that he would have disclosed the type of weapons at the disposal of the men but he would not do that in the presence of the media, and therefore called for an executive session.

The minister said, “In that facility on that day of the invasion were 31 military personnel of the Nigerian army, five personnel of MOPOL 21, five personal of MOPOL 50, two personnel of counter-terrorism unit of the Nigeria police, two personnel of Kuje police division, seven personnel of Nigeria Immigration Service, three personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), 10 personnel of correction armed square.

“These 65 people were there for the specific responsibility of assisting and preventing any attack and they were all armed. These 65 people were posted to protect the prison from any attack and they were all armed. Because of the presence of the press, I will not mention the specific arsenal at their disposal.”

Responding to Aregbesola’s request, the lawmakers resolved that an executive session be held to interact with the minister.

Recalled that terrorists suspected to be members of the dreaded Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) attacked the Correctional Centre in the nation’s capital, killed at least 10 persons and released over 800 inmates including 64 Boko Haram members held in the centre.

Following the attack, the House mandated its committee to investigate the circumstances of the attack.

Earlier during the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee, Ibrahim Sha’ban, in his speech disclosed that the committee visited the prison for an on-the-spot assessment.

Sha’ban decried the non-appearance of some heads of security agencies during the committee’s visit to the centre.

To this effect, the Committee therefore resolved to summon the security heads for the last time.
