Huge Blow! Alphonso Davies To Miss Canada’s World Cup Opener

Davies sustained a hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6, with the German champions confirming that the 25-year-old would be sidelined for several weeks. The setback adds to a difficult season for the left-back, who managed just 13 Bundesliga appearances.

Canada will begin their home World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, before taking on Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver on June 18 and June 24 respectively.

Speaking at a training camp in Charlotte ahead of the announcement of Canada’s 26-man squad, Marsch said he believes the defender will still play a role in the tournament, though he is unlikely to be ready for the opener.

Davies, who was named in Canada’s 32-man preliminary squad, is expected to join the team shortly before their friendly against Uzbekistan in Edmonton on June 1. Canada will also face the Republic of Ireland in Montreal on June 5 as part of their preparations.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps star last featured for Canada in March 2025 against the United States, where he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. He also missed international duty in March 2026 due to another hamstring issue. Davies previously represented Canada at the 2022 World Cup, where he scored against Croatia in a 4-1 group-stage defeat.
