HURIWA Urges Tinubu To Drop New National ID Card Initiative, Deems It A Rip-off Scheme

According to HURIWA, recent data revealing that 50% of Nigerians are unbanked and unbankable due to pervasive poverty underscores the impracticality and dubious nature of the proposed scheme.
In a statement issued on Sunday, HURIWA called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to halt the initiative and prioritize more beneficial public policies. Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, raised critical questions about how impoverished Nigerians, numbering 133 million, could be expected to maintain active bank accounts to facilitate the acquisition of the proposed national ID.
The group vehemently denounced the scheme as a means to siphon significant amounts of public funds into the coffers of political elites and their associates. They criticized the government’s assumption that all Nigerians possess functional bank accounts, highlighting the logistical challenges and inequalities inherent in the proposed ID card distribution process.
HURIWA argued that the real agenda behind the new national ID card initiative is to enrich the government’s inner circle at the expense of ordinary citizens. Instead, they advocated for the adoption of the International Passport as the primary form of identification, citing its broader utility and established infrastructure.
In light of these concerns, HURIWA urged the government to abandon the new national ID card scheme and focus on policies that genuinely benefit the Nigerian populace, emphasizing transparency and accountability in governance.
