If They’re Paying To Learn, You’re Not Their Madam!” – Lady Slams Overbearing Trainers
A Nigerian woman has stirred widespread debate on social media after criticising trainers who allegedly require paying learners to carry out chores unrelated to their training.
According to Ireporter Online, the lady expressed frustration over what she described as the growing trend of instructors treating students as assistants despite receiving full payment for skill acquisition programmes. She maintained that individuals who pay to learn a trade should be regarded strictly as students, not subordinates.
In a video that has since gone viral, she argued that once a trainer sets a fee and receives full payment, it is inappropriate to demand that the learner report early to open shops, clean premises, or perform other menial tasks not directly tied to the learning process. She described such expectations as unfair and disrespectful, stressing that the relationship between both parties should remain professional.
Her remarks quickly resonated with many Nigerians who shared similar experiences of being compelled to perform extra duties beyond the scope of their lessons. Several social media users recounted instances where they were made to sweep, run errands, or manage business operations despite enrolling solely to acquire skills.
One commenter noted that teachers should not exploit learners as helpers, while another emphasised that paid courses should prioritise knowledge transfer rather than unpaid labour.
The viral clip has since sparked broader conversations about professionalism, boundaries, and ethical standards in vocational training across the country, with many calling on trainers to uphold respect and fairness in their dealings with students.
