Why Nigerian Artists Earn Peanuts From Streaming — Sarz Reveals The Sh*cking Truth
Nigerian music producer Sarz, born Osabuohien Osaretin, has opened up on the significant gap in streaming revenues between Nigeria and Western countries, attributing the disparity largely to economic realities.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, the renowned producer explained that while one million streams in the United States can generate between $3,000 and $5,000, the same number of streams in Nigeria typically brings in only about $300 to $500. He noted that despite the sharp difference in returns, the cost of marketing and promoting songs locally often mirrors what is spent internationally.
According to him, the imbalance stems from broader economic factors, particularly the stronger purchasing power in Western nations where subscribers pay higher fees for premium streaming services. He pointed out that although Nigerians are passionate about music and consume it widely, many lack the financial capacity to maintain paid subscriptions, thereby reducing the overall value of local streams.
The producer maintained that the industry has made commendable progress despite structural and economic challenges. However, he stressed that meaningful growth in streaming revenue would depend on improving citizens’ purchasing power. He added that strengthening the economy and empowering more Nigerians to afford subscription-based platforms would significantly enhance earnings for local artists.
Sarz concluded that the future of sustainable streaming income in Nigeria is closely tied to broader economic reforms, expressing optimism that improvements in the country’s financial climate would ultimately benefit the music industry.
