However, security expert Bulama Bukarti and ACF Publicity Secretary Tukur Muhammad-Baba clarified that Lakurawa has been active in the region since at least 2016.

“The group known as Lakurawa has been intermittently present in northwestern Nigeria for over six years,” Bukarti shared on Channels Television’s Politics Today, explaining that the group crosses into Nigeria and retreats to the Sahel or Niger.

Bukarti emphasized that the Nigerian Army and police are aware of Lakurawa’s activities. “In 2018, the Nigerian Army engaged this group and pushed them back to Niger. Lakurawa has been camping in northwestern Nigeria since around 2016-2017,” he added.

Muhammad-Baba supported Bukarti’s account, stating that the group has been known to the Department of State Services (DSS) since its early presence. “This is not a new group. The DSS has been aware of it since 2017 or 2018,” he noted, recalling a discussion with a journalist who had raised the group’s activities with the DSS.
