The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially issued Certificates of Return to winners of the bye-elections conducted on 20 June 2026 across Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano States.

According to Ireporter Online, the certificates were presented on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, by the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, during a formal ceremony held to validate the outcome of the polls.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, while congratulating the elected candidates, urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by their constituents through effective and people-focused representation, stressing that public service remains a key responsibility of elected officials.

She further disclosed that similar Certificates of Return would also be issued to winners of the Zuru State Constituency election in Kebbi State as well as the Ekiti State governorship election, noting that National Commissioners assigned to the respective areas would handle the presentations.

The electoral body confirmed that commissioners representing different constituencies subsequently presented the certificates to the successful candidates, thereby formally affirming them as duly returned winners of their respective elections.

In a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered an accelerated hearing in a suit filed by the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against INEC over the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

Justice Salim Ibrahim granted the order following submissions by counsel to the plaintiffs, Chief Gordy Uche (SAN), who argued that the matter was time-sensitive in view of INEC’s revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, which he said placed a July deadline on the issue.

The plaintiffs are seeking a court order compelling INEC to recognise the Kabir Turaki-led interim National Working Committee of the PDP and reflect the same on its official website, as well as update its records accordingly.

They also want the electoral commission directed to publish the names of the interim NWC members as submitted through letters dated 4 May by the party’s leadership.
