Internet Service Disruptions Could Persist Up To 5 Weeks As Glo 1 Remains Operational

MainOne, one of the undersea cable companies affected by the disruptions, revealed in a statement on Friday evening that it might take two to three weeks to address the issue.

The company clarified that the fault stemmed from an external incident causing damage to the submarine cable system in the ocean. Rectifying the fault, acquiring necessary spares for repair, and mobilizing resources could take up to five weeks.

While other internet providers in Nigeria grapple with massive outages, Glo 1, owned solely by Globacom, remains unaffected and continues to operate normally. Consequently, data users, internet service providers, and financial institutions relying on Glo 1 have experienced seamless operations.

Meanwhile, telecommunications companies and some banks dependent on the affected cables for internet services faced several hours of downtime. The damaged cables include those of the West Africa Cable System (WACS), the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT3, impacting internet connectivity across West and South African countries.

Despite the widespread disruptions, industry observers commend the resilience of Glo 1 International Submarine Cable, which has remained impervious to the reported damage.
