IPOB Declares Sit-at-Home On May 30 To Commemorate Biafra-Heroes Day

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) announced on Tuesday that a sit-at-home will be observed across the South-East on May 30, 2024, to commemorate “Biafra Heroes Day.” The group urged all residents in the region to stay at home in remembrance of their fallen heroes from the 1967-1970 civil war.

IPOB had previously advised the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, to reschedule any activities planned for that day. The group emphasized the importance of honoring those who fought for Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty and stated that no government or security agency has the right to harass anyone during this observance.

In a statement released by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB declared that all social activities in Biafra Land are banned on that day. Markets, schools, banks, and businesses, both government and private, are expected to remain closed from 6 am to 6 pm.

“The global family IPOB wishes to remind every person resident in Biafra territory that 30th May 2024 sit-at-home in commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day is sacrosanct and we oblige everyone to abide by this order. It’s only one day, Thursday, May 30, 2024, no other day,” the statement read.

Powerful urged all state governors in Biafra Land to ensure the safety of persons and properties during the event. He also addressed concerns about students scheduled to take WAEC exams, advising them to wear their school uniforms to identify themselves as candidates. He clarified that IPOB is not involved in criminal activities and does not intend to disrupt exams.

“The Federal Government must understand that they cannot slaughter our heroes and, at the same time, stop us from mourning or remembering them. Those who died in the defense of our land from the extermination agenda of the Nigerian and British governments during the genocidal war of 1967–1970 are worthy to be remembered and celebrated,” Powerful added.

The statement also honored international supporters like Bruce Mayrock from the USA and various Biafran heroes and heroines, including General Phillip Efiong, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu.

“Biafrans in the diaspora are advised to obtain permits to rally in their respective countries. We must tell the world the story of the Biafran genocidal war and the resilience of Biafran heroes. Our people must understand that Biafra is coming. We have crossed the Rubicon, and nothing will make us change our mind or diminish our resolve towards this fight for Biafra liberation,” the statement concluded.
