Urgent: IPOB Demands Unconditional Release Of Nnamdi Kanu Amid Health Concerns

Urgent: IPOB Demands Unconditional Release Of Nnamdi Kanu Amid Health ConcernsThe Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have raised alarms over the rapidly deteriorating health of their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. In a statement issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group urgently called for Kanu’s unconditional release, highlighting the severe risk to his life while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
Emma Powerful emphasized the critical nature of Kanu’s health situation, accusing the Nigerian government of deliberately endangering his life through prolonged solitary confinement. The separatist group warned of dire consequences if any harm befalls Kanu while in detention, urging the international community to intervene.
Kanu has been held since his re-arrest in June 2021 after being extradited from Kenya. IPOB has consistently advocated for his release, citing worsening health and inhumane detention conditions. They argue that his continued confinement is a tactic by the Nigerian authorities to suppress their quest for an independent Biafra.
IPOB’s statement detailed:
- The Nigerian government’s defiance of both local and international court orders for Kanu’s release.
- The refusal of the current administration to heed calls from prominent Nigerians and leaders for Kanu’s freedom.
- The disparity in handling similar cases, pointing out the discontinuation of charges against other regional activists while Kanu remains imprisoned.
The group reiterated their non-violent stance in the Biafra struggle and emphasized the urgent need for Kanu’s release to access medical treatment. They warned that any adverse event concerning Kanu’s health would have far-reaching repercussions for Nigeria.
What are your thoughts on IPOB’s urgent call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release? How do you think the international community should respond to these concerns? Share your views in the comments below!
